The BLUGH: November 16, 2022
“It is difficulties that show what men are.”
Epictetus (quoted above) is currently my favorite Stoic. If, as he asserts, difficulties show what men are, then difficulties lately have shown that I am the Blobfish. Anxiety and sadness have incapacitated me and converted my typically gorgeous outer shell to resemble that of the deep sea piscis. Shout out to difficulties!!!! Embracing my true identity as a Blobfish has been squishy.
In seriousness, it has been a hard week (but life is hard and that’s ok). There are many things that we cannot control, but Stoicism brings me comfort because it reminds me of those things that I CAN control (my responses, choices, goals, etc - et al…?). I can, for example, choose to be a Blobfish or I can choose to rally and show up even though I am scared or sad or sleepy. Sometimes I actively choose Blobfish. I also control this BLUGH and can use it to proselytize practicing Stoicism and being a Blobfish and no one can stop me.
🏛LEARNING FROM THIS WEEK: Just because I like the Stoics, doesn’t mean I use Latin correctly. This helped.🏛
PRODUCT RECOMMENDATION
In these dark times, it is important to shed light where we can. I use this RING LIGHT for Zoom calls because my typical complexion is spooky ghost girl. This also serves as a lamp, is lightweight, and not too expensive as far as desk accessories go.

BOOK RECOMMENDATION
When I need comfort, I pick up this book and open to any page. I have read it fully through once and am in the process of rereading it now. I use it as a guide and reference source for when I need to get some perspective on life. A New Earth is super famous and well known, and I think for good reason.

TIKTOKS
I enjoyed these and I actually think Epictetus would too.

Epictetus and Me.
This picture is me and Epi right after I experience something difficult and show my true form as a Blobfish. He’s like, “that’s not what I meant!” and I’m like, “BLUGH!”.
