The BLUGH: May 24, 2023
“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”
Had to quote the defender of the wilderness, Teddy Ro, for today’s BLUGH since the readers voted in last week’s BLUGH and they want my thoughts on the color green. I didn’t see that coming! Y’all don’t want to hear what I think about hair gel? Fine. Hair gel does smell amazing though.
Here are my learnings, observations, and opinions on the color green over my 34 (turned 34 over the weekend!) years: Green is the most comfortable color in the spectrum. It is also a color of strength. If someone says their favorite color is green, they are trustworthy. Green is very safe and comforting but green noise (like white noise but green?) is very stressful to me. If the color green were a flavor, I imagine it would be this juice from Kuka Juice in Greenville, SC. The last time a shade of green was the Pantone color of the year was 2013. The selected shade was emerald which brings us back to the birthday thing. Emerald is the birthstone of May! Drop your emeralds in the mail before May runs out!
🌳LEARNING OF THE WEEK: Green —> earth —> nature —> trees —> BONSAI. This brief game of word association brings us to this week’s learning which, I have to admit, I learned VERY recently. Bonsai is not a type of tree. It’s actually a set of techniques. Learning this altered my view of the world, but not in a bad way.🌳
PRODUCT RECOMMENDATION
Do you, like me, lack a green thumb? I have fantastic news. The yucca plant is incredibly sturdy, requires minimal care, and is cheap! The trifecta! That said, let’s say you’re more serious than I am about house plant care, Planta is a legitimately awesome app and their tagline is “Keep your plants alive”. I don’t think they could be more straightforward about their goal if they tried. FINAL PLANT RELATED THING: always keep in mind what plants are toxic to your beloved pets.

BOOK RECOMMENDATION
When I tried to think of books that were green, the first thing that came to mind was Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver, a novel I read like 12 years ago and LOVED. Reading it made me feel wild (like a coyote wild) and want to be outside. In fact, I think I read this book mostly while outdoors because that felt appropriate. Also, she has no shortage of books from which to choose so go wild!

TIKTOKS
You know who is ostentatiously green? Grogu. I started curating Grogu/Mandolorian Tiktoks and the collection is here. It is nowhere near exhaustive of all the amazing Grogu content, but is a good start.
